3 C's That Sabotage Relationships:

3. Lack Of Courage

Wednesday, December 3rd

Matthew 14:22-32
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”  28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”  29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said.  So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.  31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”  32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.

This is profound, isn’t it?  I know I would be scared, would you, if you saw someone walking on the water towards you?  Notice what Jesus doesn’t do, he doesn’t try and rationalize with them.  He was firm and direct!  How many times in our fear do we freeze, irrationally making unhealthy choices.  Even as I am thinking about this, do you think it could be possible that for some we don’t even realize we live in fear?  We’ve just named it something different or masked it in a way.  I think this is something to be curious about for many of us.

Peter does the unthinkable by our worldly standards yet while having faith in who Jesus is he was able to walk to him on the water.  Even in the brave courage he showed his faith wavered as he was more worried about the chaos around him than who was right in front of him.
It doesn’t matter how far away you’ve gone, how long you’ve been gone, it doesn’t matter how bad it was or got, as Peter modeled, shout out to Him, and he will cover the distance!!!
How accurate is that for us?  We can be brave and believe one second and in the next second deny and doubt, I don't know about you but my fleshly (sinful) life can be much like the Peters interaction here with Jesus.

To take another note from Jesus, he is calling Peter out with “You have so little faith, why did you doubt me?”  Jesus is loving Peter, trying to help him see what he can not.  I believe we need to heed this wisdom today, can you sit with this question today,

"You of little faith, why do you doubt me?”
May this question convict you of keeping your eyes and heart solely on Jesus!

May this song be food for your soul!
