The lyrics of The Blessing follow scripture found in Numbers 6:24-26. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

What does it mean to be blessed? Oftentimes we can confuse the comfort we feel from material possessions as being blessed by God. But, if that’s our view of being blessed, we are missing so much. Blessed means to be divinely favored, prosperous, truly happy, and fully satisfied in God.

Maybe it’s not material possessions, but external circumstances that we think need to be different before we are blessed. Jesus gives us the beatitudes in Matthew 5 to challenge this. He says “blessed are the poor in spirit…those who mourn…the meek…those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…the merciful…the pure in heart…” and the list goes on. Being blessed by God means experiencing hope and joy in Him, despite any outward circumstances. If you wait to receive God’s blessing until everything around you is perfect, you’ll miss it. God's blessings are in the midst of the hard things. To be blessed is to experience intimacy with your Creator and let Him care for you through it all.

You can experience blessings right here and right now. Are you broken inside? Jesus says you are blessed. Are you grieving? Jesus says you are blessed. Are you struggling to stand firm in your faith when everything around you is crumbling? Despite even this, Jesus says you are blessed. The blessing is not dependent on what we have, what we do, or the season we are in, but on God and His love, grace, and mercy.

Accepting we are blessed renews our minds and brings us more into alignment with God's truth. As we sing “Amen” we are declaring this truth. Amen means “it is certain.” We can know for certain that the Lord blesses us and keeps us. That he keeps our family, our children, and generations to come. Listen to and declare the truths spoken in this song throughout day today, then consider how you can walk out this truth.

What would it look like to live each and every day as blessed?
