“The Wild Goose”

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. - John 3:8

It is interesting in exploring early church history (another passion of mine) relative to my obvious interest in my own Celtic heritage, that I keep finding renditions of a goose in their sacred art, while for Rome in was always the dove…

The Greek and Roman church was more about knowledge and “learning” their way to God, as an emphasis, if I could paint with a wide brush. In fact, Paul appealed to them on intellectual grounds in Acts.

The Celtic followers were all about mission and evangelistic outreach and saw the Holy Spirit not as the comforting dove of the Roman church, but they called Him “The Wild Goose” and focused more on action than “getting the theology right.”

They spoke affectionately about the Holy Spirit as a loud, disruptive, determined “Goose” and Guide for mission!

I think about that every time I see a lead Canada goose take flight and the followers rising to follow. The Celtic view was clearly portrayed in nature.

I just love that.

The Holy Spirit has been, in my own experience, anything but tame and predictable.

I pray for the Holy Spirit to be wild and disruptive in your lives as he guides you forward in whatever mission he has for you!
