Read Genesis 4:25-26- 25 Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.

What do you notice? This has a different feeling, doesn’t it? Reference to God’s provision for a son, Seth. Where, especially Lamech, didn’t reference God’s provision, he took wives and they had kids.

But the author made a point with the last line, “people began to call on the name of the Lord.” Yes, violence, taking, chaos, was in the world, but there were some who called on the name of the Lord.

That phrase is a declaration of dependence, in other places of scripture it equates to “taking hold of God” (Isaiah 64:6), aligning with his purposes (Isaiah 44:5-6) and declaring him as the one and only God (Zechariah 13:9).

Like last week, do you see the two paths? Not necessarily Cain’s path and Seth’s path, even though some do define it that way. I don’t define it that way, because each of us has our struggles of pain, chaos, and sin. I think the author is getting our attention, with the choice of how we live.

Take a moment and open up your bibles to those three passages on what it means to call on the name of the Lord. How can you live that out today? (Taking hold of God, aligning with His purposes, declaring He is your one and only)?
